ANNUAL REPORT OF THE HONORARY SECRETARY OF THE 17TH MARCH 2005
MTS SCIENTIFIC MEETINGS
The Society held two major scientific meetings for all of the members during the year: Spring Meeting 2004 This was held at the Mount Hotel Wolverhampton on 19th March 2004 and hosted by the members from New Cross Hospital. The meeting was well attended by over 100 members. The morning comprised of four presentations, by Dr Mike Cushley from Dudley on Developing a specialist respiratory community outreach service, by Prof. John Stradling on Recent advances in sleep apnoea, by Dr Christopher Evans from Broadgreen Hospital Liverpool on Medico-legal issues in respiratory medicine, and by Dr Sivasoghy from Papworth on Vasculitides and pulmonary disease. After an excellent lunch and opportunity to meet colleagues and visit the sponsors display stands, there was an Asthma update by Dr Peter Howarth from Southampton. The 2004 Harold Thomas Travelling Fellowship was won by Dr Martin Wildman for a PowerPoint presentation on the outcome of COPD admissions to ITU. The MTS 2004 Nurse/Health Care Professionals Prize which was won by Vicky Williams and Andrea Riley for a presentation on the use of NO in painful paediatric procedures. Overall this was a wide ranging and highly educational meeting. The meeting concluded with the Annual General Meetings, the minutes of which are attached to this report. Autumn Meeting 2004 This was held at The Britannia Stadium Stoke on Trent on 15th October 2004 and hosted by Dr Hussain and colleagues. The morning session started with Dr Keily from Royal Hallamshire Hospital Sheffield on New therapies in pulmonary hypertension. Prof Monica Spiteri and Dr Daniel Gey Van Pittius presented their work on Real time viewing of bronchial cancer . In the second half of the morning Dr Carby from the Royal Brompton Hospital talked on Referral for lung transplantation, recipient selection and outcome. Finally Prof Wedzicha from St Bartholomew’s Hospital London outlined the new proposals for the Home oxygen service. After lunch Dr Martin Miller discussed appraisal using the Mini-CEX method. Dr Maguire then presented the Liverpool One Stop lung cancer diagnostic service. Professor Stephen Durham from the Royal Brompton Hospital then discussed Immunotherapy in the 21st century. Finally after tea, Dr Keith Prowse, current Hans Sloane Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians outlined the current and future effects of the European Union regulations on the NHS. There was a parallel session in the afternoon for nurses, and others. The meeting was well received by all those attending. The Council was grateful for the hard work put in by the organisers. MTS Council Meetings The Council held two meetings during the year 2004/5. The first took place on 15th October 2004 at the end of the Autumn meeting of the Society in the Britannia Stadium, Stoke on Trent, and the second on 27th January 2005 at Johnathan’s Restaurant Birmingham. Issues discussed including making the MTS more accessible to the widening membership, creation of a new logo for the Society (seen at the top corner of this report), and making the necessary changes to the Society to reflect the change in the structure of the membership. This included production of a new handout for membership application, making necessary changes to the Constitution which will be presented at the next meeting of the Society’s AGM in April 2005, re-writing the Guidelines for running an MTS meeting, planning for future meetings of the Society, and discussion of the increasing importance of the MTS website as a means of communication and feedback, as well as a method of keeping track of the membership. In addition discussion included issues for the various specialist groups within the Society.
